LOCAL GLOUCESTER COUNTY NAACP ACTSO STUDENT, KUMBAH GIVENS, GOES TO THE IMAGE AWARDS
A local high school student was selected to attend the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) the 48th Annual NAACP Image Awards presentations on February 11th.
These premier multicultural awards were presented at a spectacular show in Hollywood, California. The annual show celebrates the accomplishments of people of color in the field of television, music, literature and film and also honors individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors.
Kumbah S. Givens, a senior at Gloucester County Institute of Technology (GCIT), where she majors in the Performing Arts department was invited to be a part of the spectacular event, because of her participation in the Gloucester County NAACP ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics), a student enrichment program that culminates in a local and national competition where students who participate compete with other students in various categories for awards, and prizes totaling over $150,000.
Kumbah received two gold medals in photography and vocal contemporary at the New Jersey State ACT-SO competition propelling her to compete at the national ACT-SO completion; In addition, she won gold, silver and bronze medals in Dramatics and a silver medal in Oratory. Her academic performance, artistic talents and involvement in a host of community projects earned her invitation to the prestigious awards ceremony.
Kumbah, along with other outstanding ACT-SO school students from across the United States, traveled to Hollywood, California. During the program, Ms. Givens and the other students had the opportunity to interact with actors, vocal and musical performers, writers, film directors, experts and leading influential African American leaders and discuss their experience and their craft. . Students also enjoyed the grandeur of the performances and attended luncheons and dinners. Ms. Givens was among the 16 invited students, and only one chosen from the ACT-SO Region II area, to experience this awesome event. While there, she was able to get a better understanding of the history and struggles of African- Americans in the entertainment business.

As s student who excels academically, dramatically, socially, and humanly, her attendances at this highly publicized event afforded her the opportunity to aspire to reach the apex of her abilities.
